IS IT NECESSARY TO CHARGE A NEW SMARTPHONE FOR 8HOURS
After buying a new phone
We all have a question in mind
How many hours to charge this new smartphone
Smartphone shop vendor says to charge the new phone for 8 hours
Is it really necessary to charge a new smartphone for 8 hours
As it won’t take 8 hours to charge the newly bought smartphone
Then why these smartphone vendors are saying to charge the newly bought smartphone for 8 hours
There is a science behind this
Let’s see the science behind this
Actual topic
A few decades before
Smartphones and other gadgets come with nickel-based batteries, that is nickel-cadmium battery or nickel hydrate battery
But now
It’s changed to lithium ion or lithium polymer battery
So we have got another question
Why the battery has changed from nickel-based batteries to lithium-based batteries
Because lithium-based batteries are better than nickel-based batteries
Let’s see why
Nickel-based battery has many disadvantages which are not there in the lithium-based battery
Let’s see that
In nickel-based batteries that is nickel cadmium or nickel hydrate battery, there is no provision to check whether the battery is fully charged or not
So these batteries are charged 8 hours or charged overnight
Now let’s see the second disadvantage of nickel-based batteries
Nickel based batteries have memory effect
Let’s explain this by using an example
So that even non-techy people could easily understand this
Consider you charge nickel-based batteries daily when it becomes 40% and charge till 89%
Then the nickel-based battery consider 40% as a lower point and 80% as the highest point
It will keep a memory for these lowest and highest points in it
Now let’s see the third disadvantage
The self-discharge rate in the nickel-based battery is higher as compared with the lithium-based battery
Another advantage of using lithium-based battery over the nickel-based battery is that lithium battery is slimmer than nickel-based battery
Now 99% of batteries in smartphones are lithium-based batteries
CONCLUSION
There is no need of charging a new smartphone for 8 hours or overnight. It was only true for nickel-based batteries
But now it’s not needed to charge 8hours, Now more 99.99% of batteries comes with lithium-based batteries
Lithium-based batteries are only needed to charge until the battery becomes full
